“The Story of the Boone County, Illinois, Settlement”
“The Story of the Boone County, Illinois, Settlement” July 23, CDT 3:30-4:30 PM in the Livsreise Auditorium 277 W. Main Street, Stoughton Livsreise is pleased to welcome back our speaker, Rasmus Sunde. He is a Norwegian historian and author. Rasmus holds a doctorate in migration history and is an associate professor at the University of Sogn og Fjordane. He will be speaking about the Long Prairie settlement, near the present village of Capron, Illinois. Many of the first settlers came directly from Sogn, Norway, the recruiting region being Vik Parish exclusively. In 1843 three ships left Bergen again with immigrants principally from Sogn, especially Aurland and Vik. Those who came from Aurland went to Koshkonong, in Wisconsin, and many of those who came from Vik. A few moved from Chicago to join others from Sogn. Thus, by the autumn of 1844 the settlement numbered about one hundred individuals. The Long Prairie Settlement continued to grow for a decade.
