The Story of Olaf Skye narrated by Jerry Stromberg
Faithful Norwegian-American-Canadian Pioneer, Blacksmith, Prospector, Farmer, Citizen and Family Man. Olaf Skye born on a farm near Larvik, Vestfold municipality, in southern Norway in 1872. He came alone to the United States in 1890 and learned blacksmithing from his uncle in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He moved to central Wisconsin, first Waupaca and later Iola where he had a blacksmith shop. After trying his luck in the Canadian gold fields between 1898 and 1900 He returned to Scandinavia and married Mathilda Thorson and became a father. In 1905 his wife died from TB, so he put his daughter in care of some friends and went to Saskatchewan to homestead, eventually spending six months there and six months of the year in Wisconsin with his daughter., Norma. He continued with this arrangement until 1921 when he decided to leave his Canadian farm behind. His daughter started writing her father’s biography but only got to 1951 when she passed away. Her son, Jerry Stromberg took up the task of finishing the story. It was finally published in 2022. This is not your ordinary immigrant story but one with many twists and turns. You are invited to hear all of it at Livsreise om Saturday June 29. This is a live presentation
