Scholarly Scoop: “Grammer. Rules. Revised?”
Many of us have been taught traditional rules about written English: do not end a sentence with a preposition; do not split an infinitive; do not use “who” as an object; do not use “that” to refer to humans; and so on. Some of these rules were never based in the realities of written English. Established writers often did not observe them. Additionally, some of those rules that were relevant are becoming less so, as written English increasingly incorporates more features from spoken English, and grammar books begin to acknowledge the acceptability of once stigmatized features. He teaches advanced courses in style and grammar to students who plan to become professional editors.
