Sons of Norway- Mandt Lodge invites the public to a presentation on Saami Culture in Contemporary Scandinavia on Thursday, March 14 at 7 PM. The lodge is located at 317 South Page Street in Stoughton. The Saami, an indigenous people living in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, have a distinctive and fascinating culture. In contrast to their settled, agriculturalist Scandinavian neighbors, many Saami have traditionally practiced migratory reindeer husbandry. But Saami culture has also adapted to the modern world. A host of contemporary Saami artists, activists, and scholars are figuring out what it means to be Saami in contemporary Scandinavia, and how Saami culture can thrive in the twenty-first century. This talk will look at both the traditional and the modern in Saami culture, and will aim to show the dynamic nature of the Saami community today. John Prusynski is a PhD student at UW–Madison in the department of German, Nordic, and Slavic. He studies contemporary Saami literature and folklore, and is particularly interested in how Saami authors are responding to the challenges and opportunities of globalization.
