Rockdale Beer Cavern Program at Sons of Norway
Sons of Norway- Mandt Lodge is hosting “An Evening at the Rockdale Beer Cellar with Richard Moen” on Wednesay, November 10, at 7:00 PM. The lodge is located at 317 South Page Street, Stoughton. Rockdale Beer Cellar is undergoing preservation efforts to repair damage to the 160-year-old limestone cavern built to store beer during early Norwegian immigration to Koshkonong Prairie. Dane County Park volunteers are replacing limestone building blocks broken loose at the front of the entrance arch by ice over the past 140 years. The project also involves removing soil that has eroded from the surrounding hillsides and filled the approach area. The Cellar itself is largely intact. Rockdale Beer Cellar is located in CamRock Park near the south end of CamRock Trail in the village of Rockdale. The program will highlight early Norwegian immigrant to Koshkonong Prairie, early development of Rockdale, Beer Cellar preservation efforts, and future efforts to celebrate the Beer Cellar’s place in history. Presenter Richard Moen serves as a Dane County Parks Volunteer under its Certified Land Steward Program. His family arrived on Koshkonong Prairie in 1842 (Albion), 1847 (Oakland), 1850 (Christiana, Pleasant Springs), 1900 (Cooksville), and 1953 (Rockdale). He has long been a member of Koshkonong Prairie Historical Society (KPHS), serving as Vice-President and President, and recently formed Rockdale Historical Association, a committee of KPHS, with another descendant of early Norwegian immigrants. Please contact Darlene Arneson at arnesonfamily5@gmail.com or 608-873-7209 for more information. Mandt Lodge is handicapped accessible with a lift located on the south side of the building. There is parking on the street, public parking lot behind the Stoughton Senior Center, or in the Livsreise parking lot if their building is closed. We always encourage you to bring donations for the Stoughton Food Pantry! The public is always welcome at Mandt Lodge!
