Day on the Prairie
Join Sons of Norway Mandt Lodge and Koshkonong Prairie Historical Society for their second annual “A Day on the Prairie- Vossings on the Prairie” on Saturday, August 25 at 12:30 pm. Starting at St. Paul’s Liberty Lutheran Church (3494 Oak Park Road, Deerfield) and then caravanning through the prairie. Learn about historic Vossings like Nels Gilderhus (first Norwegian to claim land on the prairie) and Torger Thompson (once the largest landowner in Dane County), and the Vossing legacy and influence on the local Norwegian-American community. The group will travel to the home of Sjur Styrkson Reque, early pioneer settler and site of first Liberty Church services; St. Paul's Liberty Lutheran Church, oldest Norwegian Lutheran Church continuously in use in North America; Deerfield Lutheran Church, built in 1890 after a predestination dispute split the Liberty congregation; and the Berge homestead, featuring a settler log cabin built in the 1850's Possibly a social event at Nora!
