Stoughton's annual celebrations reflect it's rich Norwegian and agricultural heritage.
Stoughton is home to one of the country's largest Syttende Mai Festivals. Syttende Mai is Norwegian for seventeenth of May. This date is significant in Norwegian history as it is their Independence Day. In honor of the Norwegian's that settled in this area in the late 1800's, Stoughton started celebrating this event in the 1950s. Syttende Mai is held each year on the weekend closest to the 17th of May. Visit the Syttende Mai area of the website to explore all of the events and activities that take place during this culturally rich weekend.
In February, Syttende Mai fever starts with the Annual Norse Afternoon of Fun. The afternoon's main event is a performance by Stoughton's beloved Norwegian Dancers and is a fun event for the entire family. The Syttende Mai King and Queen and Prince and Princess for the coming year are announced as well as the receipient of the Community Appreciation Award.
In early July, the Stoughton Fair combines the exhibits of 4-H and FFA members with live entertainment and a midway filled with rides and games. One of the remaining free fairs in the State, the Stoughton Fair is a place for friends, family and fun. Stick around for the grand finale - 4th of July fireworks!
August is the month to honor the early pioneer Norwegian Stoughton women who started the Coffee Break. Stoughton celebrates their claim as "The Home of the Coffee Break" with the Coffee Break Festival on the second Saturday in August. The day is filled with coffee, a classic and custom car show, arts & crafts fair, family entertainment, the Java Jog and live music.
The first weekend in December is home to the Victorian Holiday Weekend.
